Andrews NORFOLK - Mason Cooke Andrews died Friday morning at his home in Norfolk. Born on April 20, 1919, in Norfolk, his parents were Jean Curry Cooke and Charles James Andrews, M.D. He was a graduate of Maury High School and Princeton University. He received his medical training at Johns Hopkins in obstetrics and gynecology and returned to Hopkins for a fellowship in reproductive medicine in 1971. He served as a medical officer on an LST in the South Pacific during World War II. Dr. Andrews practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Norfolk from 1950 until the current year. Concurrently, he had an active life as a public servant, concentrating his efforts on both the establishment of the Eastern Virginia Medical School, and on nurturing the city he loved. As a member of numerous civic, business and charitable boards, as a planning commissioner, as a councilman, as vice-mayor, as mayor, and as a deeply committed private citizen, he persisted in pursuing his vision of a resurgent healthy city. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sabine Alston Goodman Andrews; a brother, William Cooke Andrews; two daughters, Jean and Mason Andrews; and two grandsons, Ilyas Mason Khan and Alston Cooke Underwood. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, C. James Andrews Jr. Following a private burial, there will be a celebration of his life Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the auditorium at Nauticus beginning at 5:30 p.m. The family asks that friends, patients and colleagues join them in sharing reminiscences. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Foundation for the Howard and Georgeanna Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine or any charity of choice. H.D.
