He was 97 on May 15th and had been sick in and out of the hospital for several years. He was the husband of the former Miss Ruth L. Hill, of Williamston, N.C. A member of Queen Street Baptist Church for many years, Mr. Anthony had served on the usher board, trustee board, and was a deacon for 42 years. He was faithful in the discharge of his duties at the church, and in all organizations with which he was connected. Mr. Anthony, came of Norfolk, in 1904, and was employed by the railroad for several years and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 27 years, before he retired in 1949. He served as an officer of the Peach Blossom Lodge 757 of the National Ideal Benefit Society, and he was an Odd Fellow, member of Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge No. 1303, Raphael Lodge Prince Hall Masons 162, and was an officer of the Knights of Pythiss, Friendship Lodge No. 3. He was a member of the Norfolk Chapter of the Virginia Voters League, where that organization was active in Norfolk, and served for a time as treasurer. He was active in voter registration campaigns during the 1960s when blacks up town were building a political organization to increase their voting strength. A funeral was held at Queen Street Baptist Church, with Dr. J. Jasper Freeman, in charge. In addition to the widow, survivors consist of a daughter, Mrs. Annie B. Powell, two grandsons, Levi and Malachi Powell, a great grand-daughter, Miss Judy Powell, and other relatives. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, with Eric McAllister, worshipful master, Edward Williams, and other fraternity brothers on the program. Graves Funeral Home had charge.
