Dr. Archer, a native of Norfolk, was on the staff of Norfolk Community Hospital and had offices in the Berkley and Church Street areas. He graduated from Hampton Institute, Lincoln University, and Howard University School of Medicine. Prior to entering medical school, he taught high school in Georgia, North Carolina and Norfolk and coached football. He served on the board of directors of Berkley Citizens Savings and Loan and Ghent Arms Nursing Home. In 1984 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by Norfolk Community Hospital. He was a member of the Norfolk Medical Society and Medical Society of Virginia. He was a member and vestryman emeritus of Grace Episcopal Church, and a member of Kit Kats Club, Lambda Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi, Sigma Pi Phi and Aeolian Club of Norfolk. Survivors include his wife, Gloria Ramsey Archer; a stepdaughter, Yolanda M. Torres, and a stepson, Cecil Marquez, both of New York City; two sisters, Ella A. Saunders and Cleo Z. Archer, both of Norfolk; two brothers, Richard Archer and James P. Archer, both of Norfolk; three step-grandchildren and two step- great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in Grace Episcopal Church by the Rev. Joseph N. Green Jr. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Monday. Omega Psi Phi will hold a service at 7 p.m. Sunday in Hale Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Norfolk Community Hospital Memorial Fund.
