Linda Beard Armstrong, a Norfolk native, departed this world on August 15, 2020. 
Born to parents Franklin Linwood Beard and Willie Davis Beard on March 1, 1948, 
Linda’s lifelong dedication to community service began as a teenager when she 
joined Bethel #42 Jobs Daughters. Her commitment to community would be the 
common thread spun throughout her life. In 1968, Linda married David H. 
Armstrong, Jr., and they took up residence in Elizabeth Park, raising two sons 
while working and participating in the community. A wonderfully dedicated wife 
and excellent mother, Linda was married to David for almost 52 years, their 
connection and love deepening with each passing year. They loved sharing time 
together, traveling, and exploring the house concert scene. Linda and David 
attended many First Settlers Region, Porsche Club of America events. Linda gave 
of her time freely to others and used her green thumb to beautify her 
surroundings. Linda graduated from Princess Ann High School, class of 1966. 
After attending Longwood College and graduating from Old Dominion University 
with a degree in Education, she taught kindergarten, first, and second grade-
inclusion at Norfolk Public Schools (NPS) at Young Park and Little Creek 
Elementary. Always a proponent of taking action to improve a situation, she was 
outspoken in her dedication to NPS and served as Secretary of the NPS Facility 
Senate. She retired from Norfolk Public Schools at Chesterfield Academy. When 
her sons became active in baseball and Boy Scouts, she took on leadership roles. 
Later she was President and served on the board of her neighborhood Civic League 
and was President of the Elizabeth Park Garden Club. She was the neighborhood 
representative to the Norfolk Federation of Civic Leagues. An armchair 
genealogist and proponent of historical preservation, she was also a member of 
the Norfolk Society for Cemetery Conservation. An active member of the Episcopal 
Church of the Epiphany, Linda is remembered by many of the parishioners as a 
kind and devoted servant. Continuing her community involvement, Linda joined the 
non-partisan League of Women Voters of South Hampton Roads, where she 
participated in many voter registration drives and served as Action Chair, 
Secretary, Voter Services Co-Chair, and President. Linda leaves behind her 
devoted husband, David H. Armstrong, Jr., sons David H. Armstrong III and 
Matthew F. Armstrong, daughter-in-law Ranna-Maria L. Armstrong; grandsons Pierce 
and Grant Armstrong, brother, Franklin L. Beard, Jr.; sister-in-law Linda A. 
Simmons, as well as extended family and dear friends. The family thanks Virginia 
L. Cocke, RN, her caretaker for 2 years. Virginia provided excellent and loving 
care for Linda. Memorial donations may be made to the League of Women Voters 
https://www.lwv.org/. Those who would prefer to send flowers (daisies were her 
favorite) for the graveside service, may send them to H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 
Norfolk Chapel. The graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, 20 
August 2020, at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. Social Distancing and
