George D. Armstrong, D.D., L.L.D., late pastor emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church, which were held from that church at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. They gathered there to pay the last loving tribute of respect to the memory of a great and good man, who held a warm place in the affections of the people of this city during his long and active life of faithful service as a minister of Christ. The pulpit and church were draped in mourning, and on the communion table there were decoration of palms and cut flowers. There were also a number of beautiful floral tributes, among them designs from the Sunday school and the other societies of the First Church, and Armstrong Memorial Church, Berkley, which was erected as a memorial to the faithful service of Dr. Armstrong. There was also a very handsome offering from the Leach-Wood Seminary, of this city. The solemn service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Edward Mack, assisted by the following Presbyterian divines: Rev. W.S. Lacy, D.D., of the Second Church; Rev. E.B. McCluer, of Park Avenue Church; Rev. W.A. Slaymaker, of Armstrong Memorial, Berkley; Rev. C.W. Maxwell, of Colley Memorial, Atlantic City, and Rev. E.T. Wellford, of the Newport News Church. Among the ministers of the other denominations of this city in the audiences, were Rev. W.J. Young, D.D., of Epworth M.E. Church; Rev. Carl E. Grammer, D.D., Ph. D., of Christ P.E. Church; Rev. Robert Gatewood, of St. Paul’s P.E. Church, Berkley; Rev. J. B. Merritt, chaplain of the Seaman’s Bethel. And Rev. Daniel T. Merritt, of Huntersville M.E. Church. Touching and eloquent eulogies were spoken of the life and labors of the honored dead. The pastor, Rev. Mr. Mack, selected as the basis of his remarks the Scriptural quotation: “This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” Rev. Mr. McCluer spoke particularly of the deceased minister’s life work, and Rev. Dr. Lacy referred to his valuable services to the church in its ecclesiastical bodies, saying that he was one of her most profound scholars and greatest leaders. He paid a splendid tribute to the gentleness and sweet Christian spirit that characterized Dr. Armstrong in his intercourse with his brethren of the ministry and church. The hymns rendered during the service were “There Is a Safe and Secret Place, “and “Asleep in Jesus, Blessed Sleep.” At the close of the service, and while the remains were being removed from the church, the choir sang an appropriate selection. The solemn cortege wended its way to Elmwood Cemetery, where the sleeping dust of this honored and beloved minister were laid to rest with the last rites of the church. Following were the pall-bearers: Active-Paul C. Trugien, Dr. G.W. Wallace, Robert Tait, Dr. R.L. Payne, James Brown, George B. Crow, F.T. Clark and R.S. Cohn. Honorary-R.W. Santos, T.L. Bloxom, W.H.
