Norfolk Virginian May 15, 1877
Death of a Stranger – Captain John Arthur, of the schooner Mary Wood, died in this 
city Sunday of diphtheria. He arrived here on Friday last in command of his 
vessel, and his remains were taken to Brooklyn, N.Y. yesterday afternoon on the 
New York steamer. The deceased leaves a wife and two children, who reside in 
Brooklyn. He was about 35 years of age.
