Ashburne, retired Navy Yard employee and prominent fraternalist and civic worker, were conducted Wednesday from First Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Richard H. Bowling, officiating. Mr. Ashburne died last Friday at Norfolk Community Hospital. The First Baptist Sunday School orchestra which the deceased led for 20 years, played two selections at the rites following remarks from the Sunday school by James Archer. James Norcum rendered a solo “O Dry Those Tears,” following a reading of the 27th Psalm, a favorite of the deceased: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?” Eulogies were read by the Rev. J. N. Fuller and remarks were made by the Rev. W. L. Hamilton. Mr. Ashburne was born 69 years ago in Nansemond County, VA, the son of the Richard and Martha Ashburne. He lived in Portsmouth, VA, several years prior to his marriage in 1919 to the former Miss Ethel Coston, a native of Norfolk. Mrs. Ashburne is an instructor at the Booker T. Washington High School. Nearly six years ago he retired from the Navy Yard where he had advanced to the rating of first class mechanic. For 20 years Mr. Ashburne had operated a barber shop business here. His club and civic activities were felt in many circles. He was president of the Acme Club and Assembly Club and held membership in Eureka Club and the Aeolian Club. Early in the war he was appointed a senior air raid warden by the Office of Civilian Defense. Recently he had been selected as a juror in Norfolk’s Corporation Court. Active pallbearers for the rites were Ralph Stoney, Wylie Selden, Chris Palmer, Charles Ferebee, William Selden, and Morrell Watkins. Honorary pallbearers included H. C. Young, H. F. Fonvielle, P. J. Chesson, Joseph Hall, and two representatives of Eureka Club. Besides his widow, Mr. Ashburne is survived by a sister, Mrs. Maggie Arrington of Suffolk, VA; and two nieces, Mrs. Florence Coston Elligan and Mrs. Odessa Coston Smith; and a nephew, Earl Coston of Hartford, CT. Both nieces are teachers in the social sciences department at Booker T. Washington High School. Mr. Coston is a postal clerk in Hartford. Out of town persons here for the rites included Dr. Alma Haskins Allen and daughter, Miss June Allen, of New York City; Miss Flora Arrington, Washington DC; John Lee Holloway, Washington DC; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Coston, Hartford CT; William Ford, A. E. Drake, John Winfield and others from Newport News; and Mrs Maggie Arrington and daughter, Miss Claudine Arrington; Miss Ira Johnson and Miss Edna Barnes from Suffolk.
