Funeral Services Slated At Christ, St. Luke’s At 2 P.M. Today
Joseph Benton Ashby, 55, vice president of the Southgate Brokerage Company, who was
promin
was prominently identified with civic affairs of Norfolk, died Thursday at 10 p.m.

p.m. at his residence, 7449 Hampton Boulevard. He had been in failing health for
some t
for some time.
A native of Mt. Airy, N.C., his late parents were Joseph W. and Mrs. Mary Sparger A
Sparger Ashby. He attended the schools of Mt. Airy.
After naval service in World War I, he established his residence in Norfolk in 1919.

1919. Earlier, he resided in Greensboro, N.C., and Lynchburg. He married in 1924 to

1924 to Miss Blanche Lambert.
Mr. Ashby entered the drug business with the Ashcraft Drug Company of Mt. Airy.
Later, 
Later, he worked as a clerk bookkeeper for the Peterson Company, wholesale grocers
grocers of Greensboro, and accepted a position with the Moon Taylor Company, food

food brokers of Lynchburg and Norfolk. 
In 1927, he founded the Pedlin-Ashby Company of Norfolk and after two years went w
went with Southgate Brokerage Company as vice president and director.
He served as salvage chairman for the Norfolk unit of the Office of Civilian Defen
Defense in 1943.
He was a member of Christ and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. At one time, he was an a
an active member of the Norfolk Rotary Club. Much of his time was devoted to work
work of the Norfolk Community Fund and the American Red Cross here.
Active in the Masonic Fraternity, he was also a member of the Virginia Club and the
the Princess Anne Country Club.
Surviving are one daughter, Miss Rosemary Ashby, and two sisters, Miss Josie As
Ashby and Mrs. George P. Hardison, both of Norfolk.
The body will be taken from the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments to Christ and S
St. Luke’s Church for funeral services today at 2 p.m. Burial will be in E
Elmwood Cemetery.
