Mr. Ashley was a native of New Kent County, in this state, and of a respectable, but not an opulent family. At the commencement of the Revolution he entered into the Navy of Virginia, as a Midshipman, and continued in it until it was destroyed, as the history tells us. He then entered into the Merchant service, and was very soon offered the command of a vessel, which he declined to accept, with a modesty which was a distinguishing feature in his character, stating the he did not think him self sufficiently experienced. Soon afterwards, he became Master and Supercargo, in various voyages, and gave the greatest satisfaction to his employers, one of whom now survives, and will bear testimony of his integrity and ability. In October 1789, Mr. Ashley settled in Norfolk, and during now nearly forty years he has prosecuted the business of a merchant with integrity and industry, never surpassed, and seldom equalled. The extensive business in which he was engaged, and for so long a period, was unavoidably attended with vicissitudes, which though they affected his pecuniary interests, could not shake the firmness of his mind; and he finally closed his career with competency in his fortune, with a character ever marked with moderation and correct demeanor, and with a reputation of unimpeachable probity and honor. The friends and acquaintance of the deceased are requested, without further invitation, to attend his funeral, THIS DAY at eleven o'clock. The procession will move from his late residence, at half past ten, to Christ Church, where the service will be performed.
