Atkins, born 2-19-1854, died 5-2-1906 Buried in unknown location in Cedar Grove Cemetery J. G. Atkins, proprietor of a saloon in Clifford Street, was struck by an Atlantic Coast Line train at the King Street crossing in Rodman Heights at 6 o'clock yesterday afternoon and sustained injuries from which he died two hours later at the Sarah Leigh Hospital in Norfolk. Atkins at the time was driving to Portsmouth from Battery Park, where he spent the afternoon. It was said at the scene of the accident that someone had seen him lashing his horse so as to get across the tracks before the train came. It is also said that he had been drinking. The horse had crossed and the buggy was directly on the railroad track when the engine struck it. The vehicle was smashed into bits. When the train had been stopped and the crew hurried back to ascertain what had been the result of the accident, but the man who had been in the buggy when it was struck by the engine could not be found. The thing was rather puzzling until someone thought of looking on the pilot of the engine, and there Atkins was found apparently lifeless. His identity was learned from papers found in his pockets, and an investigation showing that he was still alive, he was placed on the train and hurried to Norfolk to be placed in a hospital. Atkins sustained a fracture at the base of the skull. The horse attached to the buggy was only slightly injured. Atkins came from Newport News about two years ago, and has since been engaged in the bar business just outside the city. It is said that his wife lives with Mrs. Charles Mapes, at Pine Beach, having been separated from her husband about two years ago. Additional Comments: Newspaper had incorrectly spelled his name as Adkins.
