Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Spicer and Mary Crabtree Atkinson. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a Master Boat Builder after 31 years of service and was a US Army veteran of WWII. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Charlotte Sochor of Norfolk; Charles A.(Butch) Atkinson Jr., Thomas Michael(Mike) Atkinson(Susan), 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Ann Cunningham Atkinson, son, Joseph, sister, Margaret Row, brothers, Aaron Lanier, Robert and George Atkinson. He was a long time member of the Ocean View Democratic and Social Club and American Legion Post 327. A visitation with family and friends will be at the Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9:00 p.m. A Graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wed., Oct. 25th in St. Mary's Cemetery.
