D. B. Austin, a member of the Virginia Conference, at 6:30 o’clock last night in Courtland, Southampton County, where he resided with his family. The particulars in regard to his death are very meager. He fell in the street and was taken to a physician’s office nearby, but on examination it was found that he was already dead. Mr. Austin was born on Roanoke Island in 1845 and was raised as a fisherman and boatman. He entered the service of the Confederate Army in March 1863, and was captured Feb 12, 1864, and remained a prisoner until the close of the war. Mr. Austin was licensed to preach by the quarterly conference of Dare Circuit, N.C., in 1877, entered the United States life –saving service in 1878, serving with it nearly thirteen years and rose to the position of captain of the lifesaving station. He was admitted on trial in the in the Virginia Conference in 1891, and was appointed junior preacher to Granby Street now Epworth station and Huntersville, Norfolk, where he remained three years and served a number of the country charges on the Norfolk, Portsmouth and Petersburg districts and Wesley Church, Petersburg. At the time of his death Mr. Austin was closing his second year on the Southampton circuit, Portsmouth district, where he had a most prosperous career. He is survived by his wife and several children. His remains will be brought to Norfolk Sunday via the Southern Railway, and interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, the services being conducted by his presiding elder, Rev. R. M. Chandler.
