Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Thursday, May 8, 1997 
Richard J. ``Baldie'' Austin, 56, of the 5400 block of Tidewater Drive, died May
2, 1997 in his home.

A native of Norfolk, he retired two years ago from the solid waste division for
the City of Norfolk. He was commended with a certificate of appreciation for his
27 years service by the Department of Public Works.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Lee Austin; two daughters, Doris D. Spellman
of Norfolk, Mary A. Gibson of Bloomfield, N.J.; a son-in-law, Elwood L.
Spellman; mother, Dorothy Martin; two sisters, Alice Robinson and Emma Austin,
both of Norfolk; a brother, Jeffrey Martin of Atlantic City, N.J.; eight
grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; three aunts, Viola Blount, Emma Moore,
Alice Blount; an uncle, Leamon Blount; and a host of friends and relatives. He
was predeceased by a son-in-law, Larry Gibson.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Hale Funeral
Home by Bishop Anthony Moses. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery .
