Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Friday, December 31, 1993 
Deacon John Thomas Austin, Sr., 70, of the 2700 block of Tidewater Drive, a
retired merchant seaman, died Dec. 27, 1993, in Norfolk.

Mr. Austin was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He retired from the National Maritime
Union after 40 years and was a member of Faith Baptist Church, the Deacon Board,
and the Rangers Hunting Club. He was the son of the late Milton Austin.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Brown Austin; four daughters, Wander Lebauf and
Doris J. Austin, both of New York City, Brenda Mathis of Montgomery, Ala., and
Bessie Moore of Detroit, Mich.; three sons, John T. Austin, Jr., and Gerald
Austin, both of Mobile, Ala., and Milton Austin of Atlanta, Ga.; his mother,
Sarah S. Crum of Selma, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Faith Baptist Church, 2015
Wickham Ave., across from the Craftman Hall, Newport News, Va., by the Rev. Leon
Abbott. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . A wake will be held from 6 to 7
p.m. Sunday at Hale Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 2720
Tidewater Drive.
