NORFOLK - Evelyn S. Avery, 91, of the 700 block of Red Mill Road, passed away
Dec. 15, 2008. She was born Oct. 7, 1917, to the late Nettie and Ashley Shambry
in Norfolk. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of
1935-36. Evelyn was a member of First Baptist Church, Lambert's Point, where she
served in the Senior Choir and Missionary Ministry. She retired from Sears
Roebuck & Co. after 35 years of service and served as a member of the Sears
Retirement Association. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She leaves to cherish her memory four daughters, Evelyn A. Owens, Audrey Y.
Cromwell, Millicent A. Sawyer (Frederick) and Elnora A. Boyd (Robert Sr.); two
sons, Malcolm L. Avery Jr. and Ashley D. Avery Sr. (Carolyn); one sister, Elaine
Jowers; 10 grandchildren, Sheila Owens, Gregory Owens, Cassandra Cromwell,
Kimberly Sawyer, Robert Boyd Jr., Erica Boyd, Ashley Avery Jr., Andre' Avery,
Tiffany Avery and Alexis Avery; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of other
relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at noon Friday in First Baptist Church, Lambert's Point,
1268 W. 38th St. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. Family and
friends will assemble at 421 Beacon Hill Circle one hour prior to the service
for the procession to the church. The family will receive friends today at 1421
Cool Springs Way, Virginia Beach. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby St.
Chapel, is in charge. Condolences may be offered at
