Virginian Weekly and Carolinian May 12, 1892
The funeral of Col. J. W. Avery took place Tuesday at his late residence on 
Lynnhaven Bay. The services were conducted by Rev. Wm. Anson, of Eastern Shore 
Episcopal Chapel, assisted by Rev. A. S. Lloyd of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 
this city. The pallbearers were Messrs. John Shepherd, Swepson Brooks, George 
Ferrebee, William Braithwaite, Shepherd James and Robert Woodhouse. The body was 
temporarily buried at Lynnhaven but will be transferred either to the family 
burying-ground in South Carolina or to the cemetery in Norfolk, where one son and 
one daughter have made their home.
