NORFOLK - Nelson Avery, of the block of W. 27th St., a retired stevedore, died 
April 10, 1988, in a hospital.

Mr. Avery, a native of Cleveland, N.C., had retired from Norfolk Naval Base 
after 30 years. He was a member and deacon of New Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Avery; a daughter, Bernetta Patterson of 
Norfolk; four sisters, Annie Cowan of Cleveland, Creola Goodman and Catheline 
Lawson, both of Salisbury, N.C., and Ella Mae Stinson of Phoenixville, Pa.; two 
brothers, Albert Avery of Norfolk and William Avery of Chesapeake; and a 
grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in New Calvary Baptist Church 
by the Revs. Oliver Welch and Lola Gordon. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

A Christian wake service will be conducted at 6 p.m. today in Metropolitan 
Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The family will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday at 7700 Armfield Ave., Apt. 310.
