A native of Makleyville, N.C., he lived here 54 years. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Owens Masonic Lodge 168, and Veterans of World War I. He was a Navy veteran. He first worked for Armour Packing Co. and later for Saunders Provision Co. until his retirement in 1960. Besides his widow, he is survived by two sons, Joseph Guy Ayers Jr. of Endwell, N.Y., and Charles Bernard Ayers of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers, Jordan W. Ayers of Norfolk and William E. Ayers, of Ocracoke, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Leah A. Hurst of Miami, Mrs. Roy Wolfe of Logan, Ohio, and Mrs. Emilie A. Greene of Virginia Beach; and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Thursday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. James H. Nowell of Knox Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
