A native of Norfolk, he was the husband of Mrs. Janie Margaret Williams Ayers and a son of Samuel T. and Mrs. Mary Bray Ayers. He was a member of Gosport Barracks 1527 and Veterans of World War I. He was a Navy veteran of World War I. Besides his widow, surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Helen A. West of Norfolk, and Mrs. Frances A. Ketelhohn of New York; two stepsons, Hardy O'Neal and Elzie O'Neal of Chesapeake; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Nola Pace of Chesapeake; a sister, Mrs. Annie Alexander of Washington; and nine grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Twiford Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge. Burial, with military rites, will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk.
