B. Babcock, an old and tried veteran of three wars, was consigned to the grave yesterday morning, at 11 o’clock, on his farm near Lake Lawson. The deceased was born in Chatham, New York, in December 1819. In 1837, at the early age of 19, he entered the United States Army, and served in the Florida war, which ended with the capture and banishment of Wild Cat. When the Mexican war broke out, the deceased was a private in Company K, 2d United States Artillery, Col. Bankhead, under Captain Smith, with the late General W.F. Barry as 1st Lieutenant. He was present in all the actions of his company and was wounded once or twice. When the “late war” broke out, he volunteered in the 23d New York Regiment, and served all the war with credit to his State and honor to himself. In 1869, he moved to Virginia, where he won hosts of friends. Candid, upright and moral, a man of the strictest integrity and most conscientious scruples, he became a general favorite among his neighbors, a good soldier in life. Many years ago, he enlisted under the banner of the Cross, and died a consistent Christian in the Methodist Church. His funeral discourse was preached by the Rev. Mr. Bayton in a manner which did justice to a good man, with the most marked effect upon those present. The deceased leaves a wife and four children, whose loss is heaven’s gain, for by the death of such a man as George B. Babcock earth loses a mortal, but the army of the Lord gains a true recruit, whose battle of life showed whom “he loved he chasteneth.” May his bright example of the Christian soldier and man be followed by his old companions in life, who all have to answer at the last roll call.
