Theodore N. Bacalis, 90, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, December 
18, 2014. He was born in Norfolk to the late Nicholas and Helen Bacalis.
Ted graduated from Maury High School in 1943, and entered into the Army Air Force 
and served during WWII. After the war, he attended college at Old Dominion and 
finished at VPI (Virginia Tech), where he played basketball and served as a team 
captain for both colleges. He was inducted into the Old Dominion Hall of Fame in 
2000. He coached basketball at Maury HS from 1958 to 1976, where he compiled a 
record of 297-95.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Bacalis; two sons, Tommy (Tammy) and Teddy 
(Judy) Bacalis and four grandchildren; Emily, TJ, Mason and Mallory, who 
affectionately called him Papou.
A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 11:00 A.M. at the Annunciation Greek 
Orthodox Cathedral, Norfolk, VA. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. The 
family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 4 P.M. at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 
Norfolk Chapel, followed by a Trisagion Service at 4:00 P.M.
