Marian Jane Kemp Bacalis, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 27, 
2021 at home with her family by her side. She retired from the Virginia Beach 
Public School System having served as a Payroll Supervisor for many years. Born in 
Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late William Linwood and Agnes Lanigan 
Kemp. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Theodore “Ted” Bacalis, 
and sister, Lois Wommack.

Mary Jane was a 1946 graduate of Maury High School where she captained the 
cheerleading squad, and then attended the Norfolk Division of the College of 
William and Mary, known today as Old Dominion University. She was a dedicated 
bowler, having bowled in multiple leagues for over 40 years, and was also an avid 
reader and bridge player.

Left to cherish her memory are her 2 sons, Teddy Bacalis (Judy) of Smithfield and 
Tom Bacalis (Tammy) of Virginia Beach; 4 grandchildren Emily, TJ (Tayler), Mason, 
and Mallory; and 2 great grandchildren, Alijah and Theo, who all affectionately 
called her Nana.

The family would like to sincerely thank Evelyn Williams and her sisters for their 
loving care.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 3rd in the 
Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 1501 Colonial Ave. with Fr. Nicholas 
Bacalis officiating. The family will receive friends at a visitation 1 hour (noon 
-1 p.m.) prior to the chapel service. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic
