Mrs. Mary Virginia (“Jennie”) Bacchus, 94, died yesterday morning at 4 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Bacchus Lambert, 5209 Bluestone Avenue. She was the teacher of the Jennie Bacchus Bible Class of the Burrows Memorial Baptist Church for 53 years and closely identified with the activities of the church. She had enjoyed good health for many years but became ill Thanksgiving Day from a cold. Just two days before she developed the cold she attended a birthday party in her honor and was as active in participating as any of the guest. Until she was stricken ill she was a regular attendant at church. She had been absent only twice the entire year up until the Sunday after Thanksgiving Day. The Rev. Kenneth E. Burke, pastor of the church, and Mrs. HJ. Curfman, president of the Bible Class, said yesterday the death of Mrs. Bacchus was a great loss to the church and its allied organizations. She was a native of Norfolk, being the daughter of the late Joachim Martinez Bayto and Mrs. Margaret Greenwood Bayto. Her survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Lambert; a son, Richard Eugene Bacchus; five grandchildren, Lieut. Richard Eugene Bachus, Jr., USCG, Robert Hudgins Bacchus, Lieut. Margaret A. Bacchus, WAC; R. Frederick Lambert, USCG, and Miss Margaret Lankford Lambert, all of Norfolk, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon. The body will be taken from the James V. Derry Funeral Home to Burrows Memorial Baptist Church, where the rites will be conducted at 2 o’clock. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
