Virginian-Pilot March 23, 1947
A. Greenwood Backus, aged 56 years, husband of Mrs. Verna Stant Backus and son of 
the late Benjamin Franklin and Mrs. Alice Virginia Parson Backus, died Saturday 
afternoon at 1 o’clock, at the residence, 202 West Thirty-seventh Street. Mr. 
Backus, well-known produce merchant until his retirement several years ago, was a 
native and lifelong resident of Norfolk. Besides his wife, he is survived by two 
brothers, Benjamin Thurman Backus, of Norfolk, and James Hyland Backus, of 
Portchester, N.Y. Services will be held at the chapel of the H. D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, with the Rev. R. Orman Bryant, D.D., 
pastor of Park Place Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood 
Cemetery.
