Virginian Pilot  January 12, 1968

Mrs. Pearl Stant Backus, 80, the widow of Benjamin Thurnan Backus and a daughter 
of John Tyler and Mrs. Emily Riley Stant, died Tuesday in a hospital.
A native of Onancock, she lived in this area most of her life, lately at 5620 
Virginia Beach Blvd. 
She was a member of LeKies Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Edwin Brock of Virginia Beach; a sister, Mrs. 
Verna Stant Backus of Norfolk; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, 
Saturday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. David H. Smith. Burial will be in Elmwood 
Cemetery.
The family will be at 5610 Virginian Beach Blvd.

BACKUS, MRS. PEARL STANT – In a hospital, Thursday, MRS. PEARL STANT BACKUS, 
widow of Benjamin Thurman Backus and daughter of the late John Tyler and Mrs. 
Emily Riley Stant, in the 80th year of her age. A funeral service will be held 
in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, Saturday at 1 o’clock. Burial, 
Elmwood Cemetery.
