He was the son of the late John Quincy and Martha Cooper Backus and was widely known in Norfolk. For many years Mr. Backus was a Norfolk County truck farmer and was prominent in affairs of the county and city. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Holland Backus; a daughter, Mrs. E.S. Hutchinson, Jr., of Norfolk; a son, J. Holland Backus, of New York; five grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. J.R. Simpson, of Virginia Beach and Miss Ella Backus, of Pine Bluff, N.C. He was a member of Ghent M.E. Church. Funeral services will be held at the residence Wednesday at 12 o'clock noon. The Rev. J.T. Bosman, D.D., presiding elder of the Norfolk District, assisted by the Rev. John W. Rustin, D.D., pastor of Ghent M.E. Church, will conduct the services.
