Norfolk Virginian Pilot November 21, 1949

Benjamin Thurman Backus, 61, Princess Anne County truck farmer and businessman, 
died at his home on Virginia Beach Boulevard Saturday at 10:50  p.m., after 
having been in declining health for two years. He was the son of the late 
Benjamin Franklin and Mrs. Alice Virginia Parsons Backus, of Princess Anne 
County. Besides his wife, Mrs. Pearl Stant Backus, he is survived by one son, 
Bruce F. Backus; one daughter, Mrs. Doris Virginia Brock, both of Norfolk; five 
grandchildren, Miss Barbara Anne Backus, Bruce F. Backus, Jr., Edwin S. Brock, 
Ronald Thurman Brock, and Raymond Larry Brock, all of Norfolk and one brother, 
James Ryland Backus, of Port Chester, N.Y.
Services will be conducted at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments tomorrow at 
noon by the Rev. Sparks W. Melton, D.D., pastor of Freemason Street Baptist 
Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

BACKUS, BENJAMIN THURMAN - At the residence on Virginia Beach Boulevard, in 
Princess Anne County, Saturday, November 19th, 1949, at 10:50 o’clock p.m., 
BENJAMIN THURMAN BACKUS, husband of Mrs. Pearl Stant Backus, and son of the late 
Benjamin Franklin and Mrs. Alice Virginia Parsons Backus, in the 62nd year of 
his age. Services at the chapel of the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, No. 1501 
Colonial Avenue, TUESDAY at 12 o’clock noon. Friends of the family are invited 
to attend. Interment, Elmwood Cemetery.
