Virginian Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark April 18, 1928

Mrs. Martha Jane Backus, aged 73, widow of Virginius L. Backus, died yesterday 
at 12 o'clock noon at her residence in Edgewater. She was a native of Norfolk 
County and was a life long resident of this section. Surviving her are one 
daughter Mrs. John Upton, two grandchildren, Margaret L. and John Upton Jr., one 
sister, Mrs. J.W. Davis and two brothers, H.J. and C.F. Robinson, all of 
Norfolk. Funeral services will be held at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 3 
o'clock. The Rev. J.H. Hobbs, pastor of Zion M.E. Church, of which she was a 
member, and the Rev. Sparks W. Melton, D.D. pastor of Freemason Street Baptist 
Church will officiate. Interment will be private in Elmwood Cemetery.

12 o’clock noon, MARTHA JANE, widow of Virginius L. Backus, in the 74th year of 
her age.
Funeral services at the above residence THURSDAY AFTERNOON at 3 o’clock. Friends 
of the family are invited to attend. Interment private, Elmwood Cemetery.
