BACKUS CLAIMED BY DEATH Member Of Prominent Norfolk Family Succumbs At Home In Edgewater Virginius Lumsend Backus, aged 67, one of Norfolk's most widely known residents, died yesterday morning at 7:45 o'clock at his home on the waterfront at Edgewater. Mr. Backus was a member of a family which has been prominent in Norfolk County for many years. Funeral services will be held at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The Rev. J.H. Hobbs, pastor of the Zion M.E. Church and the Rev. Sparks W. Melton, D.D., pastor of Freemason Street Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Backus was born in Norfolk County. He was a member of the board of stewards of the Zion M.E. Church and was superintendent of the Sunday School. He was a director of the Citizens Bank, and a member of the Odd Fellows. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Martha Robinson Backus, Mr. Backus is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John Upton; two grandchildren, Margaret and John Upton, all of Norfolk; one brother, Herbert Backus, of Palm Beach, Fla. and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Boudro and Mrs. William J.
