Baecher, Norfolk attorney, designer of the seal of the city of Norfolk, and for many years a leader in local civic, charitable and educational projects, died last night at 11:25 o'clock at his residence in North Winona. He was 74 years old. Mr. Baecher, in addition to his profession, was for many years both a servant and leader of the public and his career was one of Norfolk's most distinguished. At the time of his death he was commissioner of accounts of the Circuit Court of Norfolk County and was chairman of the board of trustees of the James Barry- Robinson Home for Boys. He was instrumental in the execution of the endowment fund of the home, which was recently completed. One of Mr. Baecher's most notable activities on behalf of Norfolk's educational system was his participation in the movement for the erection of Maury High School. He was formerly a member of the Norfolk school board and of the Norfolk board of aldermen. He later served on the finance committee of the board of aldermen. Mr. Baecher was born in August, 1860 in Adams County, Pa., the son of Anthony and Mrs. Margaret Sowers Baecher. While he was still an infant his parents moved to Frederick County, Va. Mr. Baecher was educated at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. and married Miss Mary Etta Ford, of Frederick County, in 1887. He taught school for a while in Frederick County and came to Norfolk around 1888 as a teacher at St. Mary's Male Academy. Several years later Mr. Baecher entered the law offices of the late Peter X. Smith and in 1895 was admitted to the bar by the late Chief Justice of Virginia, then Judge Robert R. Prentice. He remained in the practice of law in Norfolk continuously since that time. Besides his wife, Mr. Baecher is survived by two sons, John Joseph Baecher and J.F. Baecher, both members of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association; two daughters, Mrs. John M. Reynolds, of Greenville, S.C. and Miss Angela Baecher, of Norfolk; three granddaughters and three grandsons. Mr. Baecher was a member of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association and the Virginia and American Bar Associations, the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. ************************************************************************ John A. Baecher - Funeral Services for Mr. Baecher, whose death occurred Tuesday night at the residence, north of Winona, will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
