G. BAILEY, 67, DIES; ACTIVE IN B&L, MARITIME Funeral To Be Held At Home Tomorrow At 4 P.M. Aubrey Gregory Bailey, 67, prominent in financial and maritime circles here for a third of a century, died yesterday morning at a local hospital after a long illness. In recent years, he was best known in connection with his executive duties as president of the Norfolk Federal Savings and Loan Association, but older residents will recall his work as manager of the Castner, Curran & Bullitt Company from about 1914 to 1926, and his vigorous fight against unregulated pilotage fees which culminated in the placing of the Virginia Pilot Association under the direction of the State Corporation Commission. Although Mr. Bailey retired in 1926 and spent several years in travel and relaxation, he was induced to participate, during the depression years, in building and loan reorganization, an outgrowth of which was the Norfolk Federal Savings and Loan Association, which he organized in 1934 and headed as president since its inception. Before becoming associated with Castner, Curran & Bullitt Company, steamship and coal agents, he was an official of the now defunct Carolina Trust Company and held an executive post with Charles Barnett & Co., coal brokers and dealers in ship products. His first work, upon reaching Norfolk as a youth of 21, was with the Foster-Bock Knitting Mills. A native of Keysville, he obtained his early education in Baltimore, to which city his family moved when he was a boy of 14. He worked briefly in Georgetown, S.C. as secretary of a lumber company before he came to Norfolk early in the century to launch a distinguished career. Although reserved in character, and ultra-conservative in his personal affairs, his friends recalled yesterday that Mr. Bailey was a man of large sympathies, but recoiled from recognition for his deeds on behalf of his fellow man. He likewise did not aspire to public acclaim, his friends pointed out, an illustration of which was his reluctance to replace his automobile, a 1925 Pierce Arrow, which served his needs satisfactorily up until his illness. Baseball and Golf Unknown to only a few was his interest in baseball, a sport which he followed as a fan from the days of his youth in Baltimore when he met and became a close friend of John McGraw, one of the great players (and later manager) of that era. Among his cherished possessions was a baseball glove which carried the autograph, "To Aubrey from 'Mugsy' McGraw." Mr. Bailey also was an ardent golfer and took an interest in gardening. He was a member of the Princess Anne Country Club and the Norfolk Yacht and County Club. He was for several years, a member of the board of the Norfolk General Hospital and attended Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He was the son of the late Richard Gauling Bailey and Mrs. Lucy Priddy Bailey. His wife, Mrs. Mabel Vaughan Bailey, died about two years ago. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. L.D. Crawford, Miss Marguerite Bailey and Mrs. Charles Farrell, of Keysville and a brother, M.P. Bailey, of Richmond. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence, 550 Pembroke Avenue, tomorrow at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. *************************************************************************** BAILEY, AUBREY GREGORY — At a local hospital, Thursday, October 2, 1947, at 5:45 o’clock a.m., AUBREY GREGORY, son of the late Richard Gaulding and Mrs. Lucy Priddy Bailey, in the 68th year of his age.
