Bailey of 837 Avenue A died in a hospital after a short illness. A native of Surry county, he was the husband of Mrs. Roberta Bailey and a son of the late Rev. Benjamin and Mrs. Marcilla Bailey. He worked for Bell Painting contractors, was a member of Union Christian Church, and an Army sergeant in World War II. Besides his widow, surviving are a son, Joseph L. Bailey Jr. of New York; a brother, Johnnie Bailey, and a sister, Mrs. Mary A. Gallop, both of Norfolk; and two grandchildren. Services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Wesley AME Church, Johnson avenue, by the Rev. Cary Johnson Jr. Burial, with military honors, will be in Calvary Cemetery with B. F. King Funeral Home in charge.
