L. Baker and Molllie E. Baker, was born April 19, 1888, at Bramwell, W. Va., and died December 31, 1907, of a gunshot wound received by his own hands accidentally while out on a fishing and hunting excursion with a friend near Lake Smith on the Electric Division of the Norfolk and Southern Railroad. The subject of this sketch came to Norfolk with his father April 12, 1901, from Bluefield, W. Va. About two years ago he made a trip to Europe, visiting England, Germany, Holland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. When returning to the United States he enlisted in the navy, where he served for fifteen months with honor and distinction. Under the new order of our President last February he secured his discharge by purchase (in July of last year) on account of his first class record. Samuel was a young man far above the average in intellect and was a student of books, the best obtainable, and of man, and of the various aspects of the country, socially and politically; was a pleasant companion and conversationalist, had many friends, both young and old; a splendid specimen of physical manhood also. He is survived by his father, stepmother, three sisters, the eldest Mrs. C. Russell Hare, Misses Jannette and May, three small brothers, Wilk S., Joe and Myron H. The funeral services were simple, held at his father's house near Oaklette, Norfolk County, Va., January 2, 1908, and were conducted by Rev. W.C. Wade, former pastor of the Second Church of Christ (Disciples) of Norfolk, and assisted by Rev. A.A. Jones, the new pastor of the M.E. Church at Oaklette, and the remains were conveyed to the Magnolia Cemetery, where they were laid to rest. The stricken family have the unbounded sympathy of the whole community in this their sad bereavement, made so much more so because of the tragic cause. The writer has known the family for a number of years and would commend them to the Father of all comfort and peace and consolation, upon whom they can lean forever and ever. W. C.
