Baker, widow of the late Maj. Wm. J. Baker, died at her residence, on Boush Street, at a few minutes past 9 o'clock yesterday morning. Mrs. Baker had been very ill for several weeks, and while her death was not entirely unexpected, yet the announcement that her life of usefulness had been brought to a close was received with both sorrow and surprise. A highly cultured and educated woman, with most polished manners and charming conversational powers, the deceased was the center of a large circle of admiring friends. For many years she had instructed the young in the rudiments admiring friends. For many years she had instructed the young in the rudiments of education, so necessary in this progressive age, and was recognized by parents as well as her scholars as one of the most successful instructresses Norfolk has ever known. Some of the brightest young men and women in the city, who adorn society and fill prominent positions of trust and confidence, were pupils of her school, and on all sides her splendid abilities were the source of admiration. By none was the announcement of her death received with more regret that of education, so necessary in this progressive age, and was recognized by parents as well as her scholars as one of the most successful instructresses Norfolk has ever known. Three sons and a daughter, who are left to mourn her loss, have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. The funeral will take place from St. Paul's P. E. Church Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
