Virginian Pilot and Norfolk Landmark December 25, 1919

                           Mrs. Mary D. Baker

Mrs. Dorisleaskea Baker, 50 years of age, widow of Captain Orin S. Baker, 
entered into rest yesterday morning at 8 o'clock, after a useful and well-
spent life in doing good, helping those about her, at the end of many months 
of declining health, at her home, 209 Maple avenue.
Mrs. Baker was active in church, charity, and temperance work.  In this she 
was very prominently known throughout this community, as she had spent most 
of her life doing for others, alleviating the needy, counseling and praying 
with the broken-spirited, rescuing in a quiet way in whatever manner that 
presented itself the unfortunates and through her association with the 
United Charities hundreds have been made comfortable by her ministering 
hand.
Mrs. Baker was a member of Memorial Church, for many years president of the 
local temperance union, which, after her retirement on account of declining 
years, was named for her.
Mrs. Baker was a daughter of the late William and Mrs. Carolina Baker Adams 
of Brooklyn, Pa., but had lived half of her life in Berkley.
Her husband, Captain Baker, was a member of the Baker Dredging company which 
operated in this section successfully many years.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J.R. Williams and a cousin, Miss 
Isabel Baker, who had resided with Mrs. Baker many years.
The funeral will be conducted at the family residence 209 Maple avenue, 
Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock and burial will be in the family lot in 
Magnolia Cemetery.
