Baker We are pained to announce this morning the death of the above named gentleman, which sad event took place last evening at 9 1/2 o'clock from an attack of pneumonia. Major Baker, at the time of his death, was a member of the Select Council. ****************************************************************** Death of Major W.J. Baker This respected citizen, whose death on Thursday evening last has already been briefly chronicled in these columns, was a son of Dr. John B. Baker, a native of Gatesville, N.C., where he was born June 20th 1816. Major Baker received his education at St. Mary's College, Baltimore, Md. and in 1842 married Miss Sarah F. Collins of Portsmouth. Before the war he was engaged in the banking business in Portsmouth as a member of the firm of Hodges & Baker. He served with distinction throughout the war and was afterwards engaged in mercantile pursuits in Raleigh, N.C. Removing to Norfolk, he successively practiced law as a member of the firm of Martin, Baker & Hinton until 1870; was a member of the business house of Baker, Neal & Sheppard until 1873, and finally returned to the practice of the law, continuing therein till his death. Major Baker was several times a member of the City Councils and as before stated was a member of the Select branch at the time of his death. The City Hall and Market square flags were half-masted yesterday in respect to his memory. As announced elsewhere, there will be a meeting of the members of the Norfolk and Portsmouth bar held a 11 a.m. today at the courthouse, in this city, for the purpose of paying a suitable tribute to the memory of the deceased. The funeral will take place tomorrow. Norfolk Virginian February 25, 1882 ******************************************************************************** The funeral of Major W.J. BAKER will take place from St. Paul's P.E. Church, THIS (Sunday) AFTERNOON at 3 o'clock. Friends and acquaintances respectfully invited to attend. Norfolk Virginian February 26, 1882 *************************************************************** The obsequies of Major W.J. Baker, an esteemed citizen, whose death has already been noticed, took place at three o'clock last Sunday afternoon from St. Paul's P.E. Church. In addition to the attendance of numerous personal relatives, friends and acquaintances of the deceased and of his family, there were present in a body both branches of the City Council and a large number of members of the bar of this city and Portsmouth and a detachment of police under command of Sergeant Clarke. The services were conducted according to the Episcopal burial ritual by the Rev. N.A. Okeson, D.D., rector of the church and at their close the remains, followed by a concourse the length of which betokened the respect felt for the memory of the deceased, were conveyed to Elmwood Cemetery and there committed to the earth. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: Bar - L.D. Starke, Charles Sharp, Jno. Goode, L. Harmanson. Select Council - H.S. Reynolds Citizens - C.W. Grandy, C.G. Elliott, Jas. Y. Leigh, P.B.
