Couper Baldwin, 71, of 1309 Oak Drive, a native of Norfolk, died Wednesday in a hospital. Mr. Baldwin had graduated in 1934 from Virginia Military Institute. He retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel. He was a veteran of World War II and participated in the Normandy invasion. After the war, he held posts in Germany and Turkey. He had been an ROTC instructor at Virginia Tech from 1953 to 1957. He had served for 13 years as assistant commandant at the university. Mr. Baldwin was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Survivors include his wife, Germaine Derouet Baldwin; a daughter, Monique B. Gregory of Richmond; a son, John Derouet Couper Baldwin of Denham Springs, La.; a sister, Marjorie Couper Baldwin Roughton, and two brothers, Rufus Guy Baldwin Jr. and Francis Bernard Couper Baldwin, all of Norfolk; and a grandchild. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Elmwood Cemetery by the Rev. Charles A. Joy. Cox Funeral Home is in charge. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society or to Christ Episcopal Church in Blacksburg.
