BALDWIN SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS Prominent for Years in Business, Civic and Social Life; Funeral Saturday William Barton Baldwin, aged 73, long prominent in the business, social and civil life of Norfolk, died yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, after an illness of three months, at the home of Mrs. Baldwin's sister, Miss Bland Taylor, in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. The body will arrive in Norfolk Saturday morning, via Old Bay Line steamer from Baltimore and the funeral service, which will be private, will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. at the grave in Elmwood Cemetery, with the Rev. W. Taylor Willis, rector of Christ and St. Luke's Church, officiating. Mr. Baldwin was born in Winchester on April 16, 1866, the son of Dr. Robert Frederick Baldwin and Caroline Barton Baldwin. He moved to Norfolk at the age of 16 and in 1895 married Bessie Selden Taylor, the daughter of the late Col. Walter H. Taylor. In addition to his wife, Mr. Baldwin is survived by one brother, John M. Baldwin; one sister, Mrs. Barton Myers, both of Norfolk and a number of nieces and nephews. With the late Richard C. Byrd, Mr Baldwin entered the real estate business here in 1893 in the firm of Byrd, Baldwin & Co. The firm later was joined by Mr. Baldwin's brother, Robert F. Baldwin, and became Byrd & Baldwin Bros, later Baldwin Bros. At the time of his death Mr. Baldwin was president of Baldwin Bros. & Taylor, the successor company. Active in the civic life of Norfolk until the time of his illness, Mr. Baldwin was most prominently identified with the Association of Commerce, of which he was a member of the board of directors and executive committee, and the Tidewater Automobile Association, on whose board of directors he served for many years. Until last January, Mr. Baldwin was a vestryman at Christ and St. Luke's Church and its senior warden. He was an active member of St. Luke's Church and served on its vestry before its consolidation with Christ Church.
