Martha Washington "Biddy" Balmer, 87, went to be with the Lord Feb. 27, 2007.
She had been a resident of Harbour Pointe Medical and Rehabilitation Center in
Norfolk since 2004. Martha was born in Seaboard, N.C., and lived most of her
adult life in Norfolk. She was preceded in death by her mother, Estelle Hughes.
Biddy is survived by her one son, Horace Balmer; two grandchildren, Pamela
Balmer of Savannah, Ga., and Horace Balmer Jr. of Houston, Texas; five
great-grandchildren, Courtney, Perry, Lindsey, Chelsey and Jaden; her nephew,
Lawrence Robinson of Norfolk; her niece, Shaun Elle Sterling of Philadelphia;
two great-nieces, Tracy Sterling and Nicole Sterling; and a great-nephew,
Marquez Sterling. Her special son is Joseph Thornton. Biddy was a longtime
member of the Salvation Army and the Democratic Club of Titustown. A funeral
will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Graves Funeral Home, 1631
Church St., Norfolk. The Rev. Linda Clark will officiate. The body will be laid
to rest in Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff of Harbour
Pointe Medical and Rehabilitation Center for caring for Biddy.
