Sophia C. Barbarise, 95, of Norfolk, passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 
2025. A lifelong resident of Norfolk and graduate of Maury High School, she 
worked in preventive medicine with the Fifth Naval District before marrying her 
beloved husband, Ralph. Together, they raised three children and operated a 
successful family business.
Sophia was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and a dedicated 
volunteer at St. Pius X School. Known affectionately as "Yia-Yia," she found 
great joy in her grandchildren’s lives and faced her later years with strength 
and grace.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Ralph; daughters Deborah (Udo) Goff 
and Angela (Sean) Segerblom; son Ralph J. (Annette) Barbarise; grandchildren 
Nicholas and Eleni Segerblom; and sister Joanna Cleary.
A private graveside service was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. A 
celebration of life will be held at a later date.
