Barber at 864 Washington Ave. on September 22. The Rev. H. M. Shields, pastor of St. John A.M.E. Church, conducted the funeral services. Prof. D. G. Jacox, principal of the John T. West School offered prayer and the Rev. R. H. Bowling told of the life of the late Mrs. Barber in the community. Mrs. Myrtle Griffin sang a solo, accompanied by W. C. Fulford at the piano. The deceased died at her residence at 864 Washington Ave. on Thursday morning, September 18. She had been in declining health for several years, but her death came as a shock to her many friends. Mrs. Barber entered the Norfolk school system in 1911, and remained in the service until June 1931. She was the first science teacher in the city schools and in point of service, the oldest teacher in the system. Mrs. Barber was one of the charter members of the Friday Evening Club, formerly the Swastika Club, and was a member of St. John Church, and a member of the Bible Union No. 1. She formerly held membership in the Y. W. C. A., was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary to the Hunton Branch YMCA, and member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the National Medical Association. Interment took place in Calvary Cemetery.
