Barco, retired educator VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert L. Barco of the 800 block of Little Neck Road, a retired educator and sportsman, died January 19, 1987, in a hospital. Mr. Barco retired as supervisor of Virginia Beach Public School's Physical Education Department. He was a member of the national and Virginia Beach education associations and the Special Olympics Committee, the Mayor's Youth Committee, the Virginia Beach Safety Council and the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He had served on the boards of directors of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the American Red Cross, Tidewater Chapter. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a World War II Navy veteran, and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi and the National guardsmen, Norfolk Chapter. Mr. Barco was a former captain of the Virginia Union University football team, where he made All-American in 1935. He helped found the Hampton Roads Board of Officials and refereed high school and college games for more than 25 years. In 1982, Mr. Barco was inducted into the CIAA Officials' Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife, Inez Barco; a daughter, Leona Brewer, and a son, Rowland Haper, both of Norfolk; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Norfolk, by the Rev. Robert G. Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will be at Hale Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
