Barden, of the 900 block of Philspotts Road, departed this life Saturday, April 13, 2002 at a local nursing home after a brief illness. She was born in Princess Anne County (now city of Virginia Beach), March 23, 1917 to the late Rev. Robert T. Sparrow and the Rev. Fannye J. Sparrow and was the seventh of 13 children. She attended school in Princess Anne County and joined St. Matthew's AME Church at an early age. She later moved to Norfolk where she became a member of St. John's AME Church and served faithfully for more than 50 years before her health began to fail. She served as a member of the Female Usher Board No. 1 for a number of years as well as president. She was a member of the Nannie C. Phelps Women's Missionary Society and loved working for her church. She also was a member of the Coronada/Inglenook Civic League. She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Jones of Norfolk; two sons, Joseph Barden Jr. and wife Mildred of Richmond and Ricky A. Barden Sr. and wife Regina of Virginia Beach; one sister, Lola S. Dickerson and husband Walter of Norfolk; one brother, James Spellman and wife Mary of Harrisburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Barden Sr., and her son, Galento C. Ruffin. The viewing will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Community Funeral Home, Norfolk. Viewing will also be available one hour prior the funeral, which will be conducted at noon Wednesday at St. John's AME Church, 545 E. Bute St., Norfolk, by the Rev. Larry S. Hinton. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk. The family will receive friends at 1832 Pittsburg Landing, Virginia Beach.
