R. BARHAM DIED SUNDAY Well Known and Highly Respected Citizen and Successful Merchant of City William Robert Barham departed this life at his late residence, 227 York Street, Sunday, May 17, after an illness of several months. The deceased was a native of Surry County, Va. and was born June 30, 1837 and was in the 61st year of his age at the time of his demise. Mr. Barham served during the War Between the States in the Confederate Army as first lieutenant of the Surry Light Artillery. He was a member of Pickett- Buchanan Camp, Confederate Veterans. As commander of the Surry Camp of Confederate Veterans he was its last surviving officer. He was held in the highest love and esteem by his company and in August last was presented with a magnificent gold mounted ebony cane as an expression of their love and esteem. On last Memorial Day he was one of the veterans who received the cross of honor. Mr. Barham's record as a Confederate soldier is one of the precious memories that his loved ones and friends will cherish until time shall be no more, as a brave and courageous soldier. He was a senior member of the firm of Barham & Pollard, prominent as commission merchants of Norfolk. Mr. Barham also served a number of terms in the city council. He was a Christian gentleman in every sense of the word and was for a number of years a member of Epworth Methodist Church. A noted characteristic of his life was his modesty, unostentatiousness and humility of character. He is appreciated most by his friends and neighbors in his native county and by those who have known him longest and best. He bore a remarkable record from boyhood to his death for sobriety, absolute freedom from intemperate habits, purity of language, gentleness of manner and nobility of life, these traits being of the very finest types.
