Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 34 years, Pat Barner; his sons, Douglas, Jr., and wife, Kathy, Emmanuel, Paul and his wife, Lynne, and Gary and his wife, Carolyn; his daughters, Maria and Gina and her husband, Kevin, Sr.; eight grandchildren, Latoya, April, Regina, Kevin, Jr., Emily, Timothy, Faith and Ian; and two great- grandchildren, Jazzmin and Jaydin. Born in Norfolk, Douglas was retired and very active in numerous local community organizations. He was a member of the St. Columba Board of Directors, the Knights of Columbus, vice president of the Citizens Advisory Committee of Virginia Beach, chairperson of the Chesapeake Beach Civic League's Safety and Neighborhood Watch Committee and the Commission of Black Catholics. He was recently named Citizen of the Year by the Virginia Beach Crime Prevention Steering Committee for his crime prevention efforts through the Neighborhood Watch program. Hi celebration of life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Christ the King Catholic Church, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to St. Columba Ecumenical Ministries, Inc., 2114 Lafayette Blvd., Norfolk, VA. 23509. H.D.
