Barnes, Registrar, Dies at 76 SOUTH NORFOLK - Fletcher Edwards Barnes, 76, retired railroad clerk and city registrar for 1 1/2 years, died Friday at 2:30 p.m. in a Norfolk hospital after an illness of eight months. The husband of Mrs. Norma Kriss Barnes, he was a son of Jesse and Mrs. Virginia Carolina Doughtie Barnes. Born in Bertie County, N.C., he had lived in South Norfolk the last 54 years, lately residing at 1334 Jackson St. He was a clerk for the Norfolk and Western Railway Co. for 41 years. After his retirement in Jan. 1955, he served 1 1/2 years as city registrar and was active until his illness. He was a member of the South Norfolk Baptist Church, a charter member and past chancellor of Willie Lee Lodge 119, Knights of Pythias, South Norfolk. Besides his wife, surviving are one son, Edward W. Barnes of South Norfolk; one sister, Mrs. J.P. Mitchell of Harrellsville, N.C.; one brother, Raleigh C. Barnes of London Bridge; two granddaughters, Mrs. J.R. Meginson of Blaine, Wash. and Miss Ellen Virginia Barnes of South Norfolk. Funeral services will be conducted at the Graham Funeral Home Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
