H. Barnes died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. H.I. Wicks, Berkley avenue, at 12:45 o'clock this morning, aged 71 years. Notice of funeral will be announced later. ***************************************************************** The death of Mr. Wm H. Barnes, which occurred at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. H.I. Wicks, No. 28 Berkley Avenue early yesterday morning, announcement of which was made in yesterday morning's issue of the Virginian-Pilot, while not wholly unexpected, is deeply lamented by a large circle of friends. The deceased was 71 years of age and had been in failing health for some time. He leaves three daughters, Mrs. H.I. Wicks, Mrs. Marina F. Sykes and Miss Maacah Barnes, all of Berkley. Mr. Barnes was a resident of Norfolk County and before and since the War between the States was a prominent farmer. At the beginning of the war he joined John F. Cooper's cavalry company and served through the entire conflict with devotion and bravery. After the surrender at Appomattox he returned to his farm and was several times appointed land assessor for the district. He accepted the position of deputy clerk of the Norfolk County Court in 1880, and under his nephew, Mr Alvah H. Martin, which position he held at his death. By close attention to his duties and courteous deportment toward all with whom he had occasion to deal he made himself many and lasting friends. He was for many years secretary of the board of stewards of the South Norfolk circuit of the M.E. Church South, and was made secretary of the Norfolk County Confederate pension board. The funeral will be conducted from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Wicks, this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The interment will be in the family lot in Magnolia Cemetery Virginian Pilot January 17, 1901 Additional Comments: Magnolia File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/norfolkcity/obits/b/barnes16979gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/vafiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
