Norfolk Virginian March 27, 1895

Mrs. Mary E. Barnes, wife of Mr. W.H. Barnes, wife of the Deputy Clerk of the 
County Court, died suddenly at the family residence on Berkley avenue Monday 
night at 10:30 o'clock.  The deceased was in her usual good health Monday, and 
was stricken with heart trouble, from which she died in a few minutes.  Mrs. 
Barnes was 64 years of age and was beloved by all who knew her, her many traits 
of beautiful Christian character endearing her to a large circle, who will 
grieve with the husband and three daughters in their great loss. The funeral 
will take place from the Chestnut Street M.E. Church at 12 o'clock today.

Mrs. Mary Barnes, wife of Mr. Wm. H. Barnes, Deputy Clerk of the County Court, 
died suddenly Monday night at the residence of her husband, in Berkley.  She 
awoke in the night, called her husband and told him that she felt badly.  He 
immediately got up and went for a doctor only two doors off, but before he 
returned she was dead.  Mr. Barnes has a host of friends in this city who extend 
to him their deepest sympathy in his deep affliction.
