He was a son of Rev. James Barnes and Mrs. Margaret Barnes and the widower of Mrs. Mary Barnes. A native of Pitt County, NC, he lived in Norfolk 69 years. He was a retired salesman of Meyers & Tabakin Furniture Co. and served 50 years. He was a member of St. John's AME Church where he was a class leader. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Mrs. Lillian Alexander of Paterson, NJ, and three sisters, Mrs. Rhoda Jordan and Mrs. Ella Wells of Greenville, NC, and Mrs. Mary Whitehurst of Norfolk. The body was taken to Riddick Funeral Service. A funeral service will be conducted in St. John's AME Church Friday at 1:30 p.m. by the Rev. W. L. Hildebrand. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
