Ernest “Walter” Barnes, 75, of Norfolk, passed away in his home with his family by 
his side on May 10, 2022.
Walter was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline “Renee’” Barnes Saunders, 
his mother, Margaret Winslow Barnes, his brother, James and sisters, Connie, 
Barbara and Mary. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joyce Gearheart 
Barnes, daughters, Marie (Mike) Peace, Kimberly (Jamie) Good, Tammy (Kevin) Scott, 
Nicole (Chris) Holcombe and his 3 grandchildren, Hunter Barnes and Faylinn and 
Demi Saunders, who adored and took care of him right until the end.
With 17 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews that 
he loved and who loved him immensely, he will be greatly missed. We can only hope 
he’s enjoying his eternal life with his daughter Renee’, fishing on a beach 
somewhere.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2022, at the 
Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, with the Reverend Tracy Gregory 
officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Norfolk. The family will 
receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services from 1:00 until 
2:00 p.m.
